TOXIC WORK CULTURE
IS TOXICITY GOOD FOR HEALTH
THE TRUE DEFINITION OF TOXIC WORK CULTURE OR ENVIRONMENT:-
Every now and then, employees will experience bad days. There will be challenging situations at work. These aren’t necessarily signs of a toxic work culture. In fact, positive conflict can be a springboard for growth and innovation.
When a workplace is truly toxic, dysfunction is the organizational norm and mean-spirited behaviour occurs daily.
“It’s when the dominant daily emotion among employees is anxiety. Employees fear that they will be bullied, humiliated and/or shamed into silent compliance with values they reject,” says Shell, who’s heard hundreds of real-life examples of corporate wrongdoing from MBA students and other working professionals.
People in hostile working environments feel psychologically unsafe, as employers often violate workers’ human rights, health and safety rights and rights against constructibve dismissal.
COMMON INDICATIONS OF TOXICITY IN OFFICE WORK CULTURE:-
- Increased turnover
- Company core values are not truly lived out by team members
- Low morale among employees
- Poor communication
- Harassment, bullying and abuse
- Regular fighting
- Discriminatory attitude and behaviours
- Gossip and cliques
- Lack of respect
- Retaliation for raising concerns
- Manipulation and blame games
- Disregard for employees’ personal life (this especially applies to remote workers)
ROLE OF HR IN REDUCING TOXICITY IN ENVIRONMENT AND LOOKING AFTER MENTAL WELL BEING OF EMPLOYEES OF THE ORGANISATION:
- OBSERVE:-Fighting a deeply entrenched, evil culture can sound like a rising war.
Note - HR professionals need to identify a toxic workplace and identify it.
This can mean finding out who the leaders are not doing well with and identifying your friends - those people under productive leadership can succeed.
- OWNERSHIP :- changed 'orient' to 'ownership' because it is believed this is an important step for anyone who finds themselves in a toxic environment. For HR professionals, it means understanding their role, and what they can do to begin to develop trust and respect in the organization. While HR professionals may not be the owners of all conflicts, understanding a person’s roles, responsibilities and responsibilities is important in promoting lasting change.
Ownership also means finding out if you don't like conflicts between people. The Code of Conscience includes a personal assessment of the potential conflict conflicts HR leaders can take to determine the willingness and ability to deal with difficult negotiations and potential conflicts.
HRPA has a wealth of resources for resolving disputes throughout the year including webinars, and articles related to e-Learning programs. There is also a "Toxic Leadership" test at our Information Bank. Sign in to access these services.
- DECIDE - This is part of the strategy. Now it's time to dump her and move on. Do I have to consult with senior HR officials for ideas? That’s when you come up with the first few steps you need to take to turn your destructive organization into a value-based organization. Change needs to be clear and meaningful and it must ensure that everyone is considered. If it fits your role, it may also mean finding a way to talk to toxic people in high positions (who may be colleagues) to find out if their abusive behavior can change.
- ACT - “Now is the time to take action. That doesn't mean you have to whistle or inform the local news store. It may mean, as mentioned earlier, to talk to someone who will advise you on what to do next. Or maybe you go straight to the person who thought you were the problem and offer him or her a way to save face. You could suggest a ‘disagreement,’ and say you would like to discuss with them what you hear from some of their employees. Sometimes it can mean going out of business to get support. ”
Remember, HR leaders have a responsibility to ensure that they comply with the laws governing the rights and responsibilities of employees. If a company violates these rules, your organization is at risk of serious consequences including financial and reputation damage.
